A historic residence overlooking Kinsale Harbour
Built in 1682 by Sir Robert Southwell, one of Ireland's most distinguished 17th-century statesmen, The Steward's House offers a rare opportunity to stay within one of Kinsale's most historic properties.
Sir Robert Southwell, who later served as Secretary of State for Ireland and President of the Royal Society, established the Southwell Gift Houses as a charitable refuge for elderly people in need. The four adjoining cottages became home to widows of Protestant tradesmen, while The Steward's House formed the centre of this small community.
Originally designed with a communal gathering room on the ground floor and an infirmary upstairs for members of the Southwell family who had fallen on difficult times, the building was subsequently adapted as the residence of the almshouses' steward.
More than three centuries later, The Steward's House has been lovingly restored, preserving its historic character while providing all the comforts of a modern home.
A Living Piece of Kinsale's History
The Southwell Gift Houses are among Kinsale's most distinctive surviving 17th-century buildings. The Steward's House still retains its prominent position overlooking the original almshouse courtyard, with the Southwell family crest and the date 1682 displayed above its historic entrance.
Today, this remarkable building begins a new chapter, welcoming visitors to experience its history, exceptional setting and the charm of Kinsale.
